Berhampur as Adda for Illegal Girl Trafficking
Berhampur in Orissa has turned an adda for illegal trafficking of girls. Childline activists have rescued 270 minors who were illegally being trafficked outside Odisha via Berhampur. Childline and Railway police have been collaboratively working to put an end to this illegal activity. Most of those children trafficked during 2014 from areas of Ganjam, Kandhamal and Gajapati included teenage girls, said the director of Childline, Sudheer Sabat.
Of the 16 teenagers rescued on 20th may, 5 belonged to Kandhamal and others belonged to Cuttack, Dhenkanal districts. Four people who were transporting them from Samalkot to Bheemavaram in AP after luring saying that they will offer jobs to the girls. There were also women among the arrested people. One can easily reach from Kandhamal and Gajapati to Berhampur railway station by road. Childline activists mentioned that this is the reason they reach that place to reach AP, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Kerala and Karnataka.
