Cigarette Smuggling into India in the Fast Lane
Cigarette smuggling into India is in the fast lane as it was observed that it escalated by 4 times in 2012-14, said DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence). The DRI has released a study report of the same. It said that a loss of Rs. 2,363 crore has been incurred to Indian government in 2014-15 due to smuggling of cigarettes. Cigarettes are illegally being imported from countries like Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, China, UAE, said DRI. New Delhi, Singapore, Dubai has stood the gateways for this illegal business. DRI mentioned these details based on reports of study conducted by the WHO.
