No. of Female Smokers in India is Increasing
The number of female smokers is gradually rising and that of men is falling in India. While there is 2% fall noticed in the number of smokers, the number of females who started smoking has doubled in last 32 years. Global Tobacco Study revealed that after America, the country with second highest number of females who smoke is India.
The Ministry of Health revealed the same in Parliament. While 10,180 cigarettes were smoked in the year 2013-14, the number has come down to 9,320 in 2014-15. But the rate of smokers has been increasing gradually among women. In 1980, 53 lakh female smokers were observed and in 2012, the number increased to 1.27 crore in the country.
