Transgenders to be Part of Kolkata Police Force
The West Bengal government is taking steps to encourage transgenders. It recently decided and asked the Kolkata police to recruit transgenders in the state’s civic police volunteer force (CPVF). “The prime issue that we face is that people don’t have respect for the transgender community. But if they are incorporated as volunteers in the civic police force, then it will gradually allow people to imagine them in different roles,” said Minister for women and child development, Shashi Panja. This is a move by Mamata’s government to end stigma and discrimination against transgenders. It is known that Supreme Court recognized transgenders as the “third gender” and directed all state governments and the Centre to extend benefits of all welfare schemes, education healthcare and jobs to them also.
