Vasundhara Raje in Trouble for No Holiday for Bakrid
Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje put herself in trouble once again. Amid protests going on against meat ban for Jain festival in five BHP-ruled states, CM Vasundhara Raje belonging to the party has triggered controversy by saying that no holiday will be declared for schools and colleges in the state for Muslim festival Bakr-Id. Also it was announced that blood donation camps will be organized on 25th September (same day as Bakr-Id) in memory of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, a BJP icon and mentor of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, on account of his birth anniversary.
Muslims in the state are totally furious over Vasundhara Raje’s decision. Professor Salim, Engineer of the Forum for Democracy and Communal Harmon said that government has no right to make changes to a holiday declared by constitution and this is purely attempt at ‘saffronization’ (moves towards Hinduism).
The Rajasthan government that noticed the Muslim backlash announced that holiday on 25th September will be an optional. Muslims demand the announcement to be made in the form of papers. Rajasthan government has already steered controversy in past by making Surya Namaskaras compulsory in educational institutions in the state. Since Muslims totally against this, government took its decision back. Education Minister of the state, Kalicharan Saraf reacted to protest by Muslims against non-declaration of holiday on Bakrid. “How would it be saffronization and what does Deen Dayal have to do with it? His contribution to the country needs to be counted”.
